How to choose a down quilt? Goose down or duck down?

Popularity of down quilts

As winter arrives and cold waves sweep in, down products are becoming increasingly popular. Besides down jackets, down quilts are the best-sellers. Loved for their warmth and comfort, down quilts were once affordable only for wealthy families. With rising incomes, they have entered millions of households and grown steadily in popularity.

In developed countries, the penetration rate of down quilts exceeds 80%. Europeans use them as health care products for relieving joint pain, neuralgia and high blood pressure. Research institutions in France and Germany regard down as the most ideal bedding material.

In high-end hotels, down quilts are standard amenities, offering guests warm and comfortable sleep after a tiring journey. Hotel managers explain that hotels maintain a constant temperature, and quilts are tailored for human comfort. The comfort of down quilts has been affirmed by many professional sleep testers. Despite higher costs, hotels choose down quilts to ensure guests the best sleeping experience.

How to choose a down quilt?

However, many consumers wonder how to pick a good down quilt, whether to choose duck down or goose down, and what tips to follow.
Down quilts are usually filled with duck down or goose down, and goose down quilts are more expensive. Many sellers claim that goose down is superior to justify the higher price. So what exactly is the difference between them?

Excellent warmth is the key feature of down and the main reason consumers buy it. So how do goose down and duck down compare in warmth? National supervision inspections conducted physical and chemical tests on 90% goose down and duck down from various regions. Results showed that goose down clusters are slightly larger with higher fill power, but warmth retention and other indicators are similar. Experts from China Feather and Down Industrial Association state that down quality is not determined by species. Generally, the longer geese and ducks are raised, the more mature their feathers, resulting in higher fill power, better quality, comfort and warmth. Fill power also depends on the waterfowl’s breed, region and living environment. Under full maturity, goose down has higher fill power than duck down. But mature duck down can be better than immature goose down, so simply saying “goose down is better than duck down” is unscientific.

Many readers then ask: if goose down is not inherently better, why is it much more expensive? Ducks have long been popular for meat in China, with large-scale farming and three harvests per year. Geese produce only one crop annually, and their breeding cost is higher — this is the main reason. Second, geese are herbivores while ducks are omnivores, so goose down is nearly odorless, an advantage over duck down. Buying goose down means choosing premium quality, while duck down offers cost-effectiveness. Both types undergo thorough washing, deodorization and high-temperature disinfection during processing, so qualified products are odorless.

Tips for consumers when choosing down quilts:

First, a kilogram of high-quality down raw material costs several hundred yuan. Do not pursue unreasonably cheap products to avoid fraud.

Second, quality down quilts feel soft with tiny quills. If no quills can be felt at all, be cautious — the filling may be polyester fiber, crushed scraps or feathers. Third, do not buy products with irritating or strong odors. Fourth, avoid quilts without clear labels showing filling type, filling weight and down content. Fifth, press the quilt firmly — faster recovery means better fill power and warmth. Sixth, do not buy quilts that release much dust when patted under sunlight or light.
